Basic information about species that have been petitioned or are candidates for listing under the ESA.
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) offers certain protections to species that are formally listed as threatened or endangered. There are also other “at-risk species” that may qualify for listing, but less information tends to be available for those species. A few years ago, the Southeast Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) put together a database of at-risk species–those that had been petitioned for listing or were candidates (warranted but of lower listing priority). We built on their data to create an early beta web application to make more information readily available. Since then, FWS has updated their resource with a small app that presents the database in a new format; users should visit that page to get up-to-date information about at-risk species.
