The dunes sagebrush lizard is one of the most imperiled lizards in the United States, restricted to small segments of New Mexico and Texas. This area is also significant for energy development—oil, gas, and wind—that threatens the lizard’s habitat. Here we discuss the lizard’s case and use freely available satellite imagery and automated change detection to map and quantify the threat sand mining for hydraulic fracturing mining (fracking).
